Layoffs at Warner Bros. Discovery are continuing, with European operations now being impacted by a recent round.
This time, the layoffs are hitting HBO/HBO Max’s programming and production teams. All told, 29 staff members are departing. Executives set to exit include HBO Max EMEA VP of original programming and production Jonathan Young; HBO Nordics commissioning editor and VP of original production Christian Wikander; and HBO Max EMEA head of original unscripted production Annalies Sitvast.
“WBD remains committed to continuing significant investment in local commissions and acquisitions. However, original programming responsibilities will be handled by local linear channels and streaming teams, rather than commissioning purely for streaming,” a statement from WBD reads.
The move follows significant layoffs at HBO Max in the U.S. from earlier this month, which saw the departure of approximately 70 staff members including unscripted and live-action family content head Jennifer O’Connell and the bulk of her team.
In July, WBD announced it was planning on ceasing original programming efforts for HBO Max in the Nordics and Central Europe, as well as development in the Netherlands and Turkey.
