TIFF appoints new COO, new chiefs of programming and staff – Realscreen

The Toronto International Film Festival has appointed veteran industry executives Beth Janson and Anita Lee to TIFF’s executive team in the roles of chief operating officer and chief programming officer, respectively.
Lee (pictured center) joins TIFF effective immediately, while Janson (pictured left) will take up her role on May 20. Both will report directly to TIFF CEO Cameron Bailey.
As COO, Janson will be responsible for developing and implementing operational plans and enterprise-wide initiatives to ensure the sustainability and long-term success of TIFF. She’ll be tasked with guiding TIFF’s operations and revenue functions, working with the brand & media, visitor experience, partnerships and advancement teams to achieve TIFF’s mission and strategic goals.
Most recently, Janson served as CEO for the Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television, and brings nearly two decades of industry experience in both Canada and the U.S. to TIFF. In tandem with the news of her appointment at TIFF, the Canadian Academy has named its current vice president, programming & awards, Louis Calabro, as interim CEO, effective May 20.
As chief programming officer, Lee will serve as TIFF’s primary programming strategist and will oversee TIFF’s programming and industry teams, providing strategic leadership to festival and cinematheque programming, industry, theatrical and non-theatrical film exhibition, as well as the talks, library and youth and community work produced by TIFF’s audience and community team.
Before joining TIFF, Lee was the executive producer for the National Film Board of Canada’s Ontario Studio from 2014 and is also the founder of the Toronto Reel Asian International Film Festival.
“Beth and Anita are two of Canada’s most accomplished, impressive film executives,” said Bailey in a release. “Their ideas, leadership and passion for the transformative power of film will fill key roles for the organization and add to an already outstanding TIFF team.”
TIFF has also promoted longtime vice president of operations and event production Laura Ryan (pictured right) to the newly created position of chief of staff. In this role, she will work with Bailey and the executive and senior leadership teams to ensure the execution of TIFF’s annual plan, performance agreements and strategic plan, as well as new projects.
“In her eight years at TIFF, Laura Ryan has learned the organization top to bottom. She’ll be an important partner as we continue to respond to the challenges of the pandemic and pursue new strategic goals for our future,” said Bailey of the promotion. “With her in this key role and Anita and Beth joining the senior team, this group of leaders stands ready to deliver on TIFF’s mission and strategy.”
