TEWKSBURY TWP. – LifeCamp, a recreational and educational summer camp in Pottersville for children from greater Newark, has been awarded a $200,000 grant from the Charles & Lucille King Family Foundation.
The grant will help further the camp’s mission of empowering youth to succeed and excel in life by developing life skills, character and leadership through a summer enrichment program outside of an urban environment.
Founded in 1923, LifeCamp is a nonprofit organization that provides an enriching summer day camp experience in rural Hunterdon County for more than 350 Newark area youths every year. Campers are between the ages of 6 and 13 and come from the greater Newark public school system, as well as from Newark Charter School Programs.
LifeCamp’s overall program provides a unique opportunity for children to stretch their talents and imaginations in a way few other summer programs can match.
The LifeCamp campus is located on 90 acres of open fields, rolling hills, and woodlands along the Lamington River. The campus is an effective teaching environment that makes learning enjoyable by providing experiential and contextual learning linked to the camp’s curriculum.
“We are thrilled to receive this grant from the Charles & Lucille King Family Foundation,” said LifeCamp Executive Director Kathy Cree. “LifeCamp provides a transformative experience for the youth we serve from greater Newark, and we look forward to deepening that experience through expanded and enhanced programming which will be made possible by this generous funding.”
The foundation’s grant will be known as the Diana King Memorial Fund, in memory of its founder and longtime president and chair, Diana King. King, who passed away in 2019, was an outstanding philanthropist recognized for her commitment to educational opportunities for young people, particularly in film, television and other media. She established the Charles and Lucille King Family Foundation in 1988.
A New Jersey native and lifelong resident, Diana King was a daughter of the late Charles and Lucille King. Charles King founded King World Productions in 1964, which became the leading distributor of television syndicated programming in the country, including such iconic series as Little Rascals, Wheel of Fortune, Jeopardy!, The Oprah Winfrey Show, Inside Edition and Dr. Phil. Diana began working in the accounting department of the family business in 1972, and at the time of King World’s acquisition by the CBS Corporation in 2000, served as Executive Vice President, Corporate Secretary and Director.
“The Charles & Lucille King Family Foundation is very pleased to support and promote the future capacity of LifeCamp’s summer enrichment programs. We wish LifeCamp continued success to develop and deliver an extraordinary summer experience for over 350 Newark area youths,” said Deborah Sole, trustee and secretary of the Charles and Lucille King Family Foundation.
