MOME Open hosting summer uni on data visualization with int'l experts – BBJ – Budapest Business Journal

Monday, Jun 27, 2022, 16:15
From August 1-5, MOME Open will host a training course called "Storytelling with data" featuring workshops by award-winning Italian information designer and lecturer Titiziana Alocci and Nicholas Masterton, an expert from the Forensic Architecture research group, world-renowned for his unique methodology, organizers tell the Budapest Business Journal.
The English-language course at the Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design is open to those who want to take their data visualization skills to the next level.
Data science is one of the fastest-growing fields of the present day, and data visualization is one of its key areas. There are few fields where interdisciplinarity is so strong. Every piece of data and every relationship is valuable if presented in a way that is as understandable as possible, so it is no coincidence that data visualisation plays an important role in the everyday life of fields such as network research, investigative journalism, social media, UX design, finance, business, HR, engineering, and arts.
The diversity of the fields of application is illustrated by the fact that MOME Open's English-language Summer University brings together internationally renowned speakers from two fields that are far apart. Their workshops will explore the topics of data visualisation and data storytelling in completely different and innovative ways, presenting different tools on how to make data understandable to the recipient.
While in Tiziana Alocci's course, participants will create data-driven outputs by visualizing data linked to sounds, Nicholas Masterton's workshop will create a 3D model of a recording of a place or object using a special image processing technique.
"The aim of the workshop is to explore different media, new techniques, and the foundations and history of information design. Participants will use data from sound files as creative raw material to convey new meanings and evoke emotions from stories and current phenomena," said Tiziana Alocci, whose work combines spatial and architectural analysis, open source research, digital modeling, and documentary research.
The MOME Open "Storytelling with Data" course is aimed at data visualization professionals open to new skills, ways of thinking, and programming languages. During the five days, participants will take part in workshops and professional community events: a meetup with local data visualization professionals, and a roundtable discussion on the state of play and opportunities for data visualization in the Central and Eastern European region.
Early Bird tickets for MOME Open's 'Storytelling with data' course are available with a 10% discount until June 29, and the deadline for registration is July 4.
