Graduate School Announces Fall 2022 Programming – The University of Southern Mississippi

Tue, 08/23/2022 – 11:49am | By: David Tisdale
The University of Southern Mississippi (USM) Graduate School has a full slate of events and professional development programs lined up for the fall 2022 semester for new and returning graduate students in support of their academic and career goals.
Graduate School Open House – Wednesday, August 31, 11 a.m. – 1 p.m.
The annual Graduate School Open House will be held in the J.B. George Building on the Hattiesburg campus, featuring a raffle for $250 book scholarships to go to four lucky graduate students, along with other prizes. Students must be present to win the scholarship. This event will include food, refreshments, games, and a photo booth, as well as an appearance by USM mascot Seymour.
Professionals in Preparation Workshop Series
The Graduate School is sponsoring Professionals in Preparation (PIP), a professional development workshop series open to all graduate students during the 2022-23 academic year. PIP is designed to help students improve “transferable skills” that set them apart from others in the increasingly competitive job market. Students may choose the option to earn a digital badge that can be affixed to digital CV’s or résumés, LinkedIn, and other social media accounts.
All PIP workshops and seminars will be held in-person in the J.B. George Building, room 142, from 12 – 1 p.m. A recording will be posted on the Graduate School’s PIP website after each workshop. Students who are unable to attend in-person can view the recordings and complete a post workshop survey to receive credit for attendance. Registration is required to attend, and there is a limit of 35 students per workshop. Visit https://www.usm.edu/graduate-school/professionals-preparation.php to register.
Three-Minute Thesis Competition, Nov. 2-4
The Graduate School’s 9th annual Three-Minute Thesis is scheduled for Nov. 2-4 in the Thad Cochran Center, room 218 A/B on the Hattiesburg campus. Students have the chance to present their thesis or dissertation in a three-minute presentation; effectively communicating the complexity of their topic and research to a non-academic audience. The competition is a great opportunity for students to hone their 30-second “elevator pitch” about their research and win monetary prizes. The deadline to register for this event is Monday, Oct. 3 at 5 p.m. To register, visit https://usmforms.formstack.com/forms/threeminute_thesis_competition_registration.
